This is a very difficult story to get into. Not because of the formal style of writing, but because every character is unlikeable.None of them shows any honesty in their interactions with each other, not even Lizzie, who at quickly breaks her own promise to her father, not to write to her grandfather. And in a Scots accent, the word 'good' is usually spelt 'guid' not 'guld', as is repeatedly done here; irritating.
I kept setting this aside to read another book, and trying to get back to it afterwards.
I have reached my limit at 17% and.... have deleted it.
I'm really disappointed that I wasted my money, because I just loved THE TATTOOED WOLF, now sadly unobtainable.

I absolutely loved it. It brought so many childhood memories alive for me. I can remember going to China Town with my Dad on the oil truck in the early fifties and while reading this book I could almost smell what it was like. Great job Thankyou Gordon Carter
This is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery-thriller and anyone with an interest in the history of BC will find it engaging and full of detail. The characters have depth and Bannerman has created a world in which one is never quite sure the motives of much of the population and, true to a good murder/mystery, you are left guessing until the very end. The detail put in to making the setting as accurate as possible was also impressive. I could see the town in my mind. Bannerman's style is engaging and flowing, making for an excellent read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in murder-mystery or historical fiction. I would also like to point out that it would definitely appeal to a wide age-range of readers. This should be in high school libraries. The main character is a teenage girl and written in such a way as to be believable and dynamic. Bannerman does a fantastic job of creating a very real, strong character that does not fall into the awful stereotypes of much writing aim at teen girls (I'm looking at you Twilight).

Love the whole story and the history of Cumberland. Found it impossible to put down. The characters in the story line keep you entranced from beginning to end.
